Homemade Salad Dressing Feature

This homemade salad dressing recipe is made from scratch using only natural ingredients.  It is quick, healthy, and delicious!

I whip up this dressing daily during the work week for lunch salads.  My oldest child likes this dressing so much on turkey and cheese sub sandwiches he has learned to make it himself.

You don’t have to spend much time creating this delicious recipe.  With just a few health-promoting ingredients, you’ll have a tasty dressing on hand in no time.

Healthy Homemade Salad Dressing Recipe in Three Steps

Classic salad dressings are a simple combination of oil, acid, salt, and herbs or spices.

1.  Start the dressing with a base of oil and acid.

Olive oil is an excellent base for salad dressings because it adds a beautiful flavor.  Use extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) for the best flavor.  This homemade salad dressing recipe uses lemon juice for the acid.  I love the soft tartness of the lemon juice and the health-promoting benefits.

Olive Oil to Lemon Juice Ratio in Homemade Salad Dressing

A good rule of thumb when making dressings is to use three parts oil to one part acid, ensuring the dressing has enough flavor without being too acidic.

Health Benefits of Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Extra virgin olive oil is popular among many who want to eat healthily, and rightly so.  It is a traditional oil that may reduce cholesterol levels, lower cardiovascular disease risk, protect against free radicals and cancer, and reduce inflammation.  This homemade salad dressing recipe is an incredible way to use this remarkable oil.

Healthy Homemade Salad Dressing Recipe Lemons

Health Benefits of Lemon Juice

Lemon was one of the first fruits cultivated by humans and has been used as an ingredient in food since ancient times.  Lemon juice is still widely used in cooking because of its light, tart flavor, and health benefits.  Lemons are a good source of vitamin C, supporting heart health.  And lemon juice also helps aid in digestion.

2.  Add salt.

Salt is an essential seasoning when making a dressing.  It adds taste and balances the lemon juice’s acidity.

3.  Add Italian Seasonings

Add a mixture of seasonings labeled “Italian Seasonings.”  You could also try adding garlic powder or onion powder.  Or switch out the Italian herbs for dill, tarragon, or rosemary.

Health Benefits of Italian Seasoning

You’ll find many different seasonings available at grocery and health food stores; some are more healthy than others.  One health-promoting blend is Italian seasoning.  It has been used as an herbal remedy for centuries because of its medicinal properties.

Two of the most common herbs in Italian Seasonings are Oregano and Basil.  For even more health benefits in this homemade salad dressing recipe, double the amount of seasonings.

Oregano Health Benefits

Oregano has been used as an herbal remedy since ancient times.  It is used to fight colds and aids in digestion.  Oregano contains antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and essential oils that help promote good health.

Basil Health Benefits

Ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans used basil in medicinal remedies.  Basil promotes respiratory health and contains antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents.

And this homemade salad dressing recipe is going to top a healthy salad!
